First World War
A Friendship Forged in 1918
On 28 July 1918, United States President Woodrow Wilson ordered the flag of Serbia to be flown over the White House in recognition of the sacrifices of the Serbian people during the First World War. The proclamation invited Americans to honour Serbia's resistance, and Serbian flags were raised on public buildings across the country.
American humanitarian and medical missions worked in Serbia during the war, and American public opinion followed Serbia's wartime ordeal closely. That period established a bond that later generations on both sides have continued to reference.
Diaspora
Generations of Serbian Americans
Serbian communities have been part of American life since the nineteenth century, settling first in mining, steel and industrial regions and later across the country. Churches, cultural societies and family businesses formed the backbone of these communities.
Perhaps the best-known Serbian American is Nikola Tesla, the engineer and inventor whose work on alternating current systems shaped modern electrical power. His career, built in the United States, remains a point of shared pride in both countries.
Today
Business, Investment and Exchange
The relationship today is practical as much as historical. Serbian entrepreneurs operate businesses in the United States, American companies invest in Serbia, and people, capital and expertise move in both directions.
Working across the two markets means understanding both: American standards of process, compliance and service, and Serbian relationships, construction know-how and local knowledge. Neither market is a substitute for the other — together they are stronger.
